Ideal Water Parameters for Healthy, Thriving Koi
Clear water does not always mean safe water. Test your pond regularly:
pH: 7.0–8.5. Stability is more important than chasing a perfect number.
KH (alkalinity): About 100–150 ppm to help prevent sudden pH drops.
Ammonia: 0 ppm.
Nitrite (NO₂): 0 ppm.
Nitrate (NO₃): Ideally below 20–40 ppm.
Dissolved oxygen: Above 5 mg/L.
Chlorine/chloramine: 0 ppm before adding tap water to the pond.
Test more often if your pond is new, you have added fish, or your koi show unusual behavior. A well-functioning filter, plenty of oxygen, and stable water are the foundation of a healthy koi pond.
These are general guidelines; the right conditions can vary depending on your pond and water source.
