70 cm Akamatsuba Impressive Size, Balanced Body, and Value Built Over Time

This 70 cm Akamatsuba is a wonderful example of why size and body shape matter when evaluating koi.
Growing a small koi to this size takes time. The fish must have strong growth potential, live in suitable conditions, and remain healthy through years of care. A large koi represents more than its length; it also reflects a long journey of careful raising and dedication.
What matters is that the fish is large without losing its balance and proportions. A well-shaped koi usually has broad shoulders, a solid but not overly heavy body, balanced sides, and a smooth taper toward the tail. From above, it should look strong and streamlined not thin, overly wide, or heavy-bellied. In simple terms, the fish should look healthy and well-proportioned from head to tail. Being large alone does not make a koi beautiful.
This Akamatsuba has a striking red base with dark centers on its scales, creating the distinctive Matsuba pattern along its back. At this size, its body shape and pattern can be appreciated across a much larger frame. The combination of 70 cm size, balanced proportions, and distinctive pattern gives this koi a special presence in the pond.
Large size can add to a koi’s appeal and value, especially when the fish still has balanced proportions, attractive color, and good health. However, the fish’s age should be confirmed by the breeder or its records; age alone does not guarantee high value. A koi is judged as a whole, including its size, body structure, color and scale quality, health, age, and lineage.
For new koi hobbyists, one simple lesson is worth remembering: a valuable koi is not simply large it has grown large while remaining beautiful, balanced, and healthy. Achieving that takes both the fish’s natural potential and years of proper care.
